An example of one of these initiatives is the disconnection and repurposing of six roofing gullies, which are now used to harvest rainwater into a purpose built 5000 litre tank. Using two custom pumps, this water is then redistributed back to site for use for both concrete and dampening down work and also to provide water to our welfare facilities and feeding flush elements.
A ramp and compound hardstanding have been cast with Earth Friendly Concrete which saves 80% of embodied carbon reducing our footprint, every 1m3 saves 220kg of CO2 emissions and we poured 59m3.
Redundant scaffold boards were also re-used to make planters in the viewing area and we have also installed an electric vehicle charging point on site to encourage our visitors to travel in a more sustainable manner.
Tower banner lighting timings are changed fortnightly to suit reported sunset hours.
A photocatalytic converter surface treatment has been applied to the banner to prevent the build-up of grime and improve air quality.
All leaves within the site boundary are collected and mulched to reduce waste and provide a nutrient rich base for site planters and baskets.
All of our waste is segregated and avoids disposal to landfill promoting recycling. Wherever possible, materials are repurposed on site or within the community rather than disposed of.
We have built a ‘bug hotel’ with waste materials to shelter insects in order to to improve the biodiversity of the surrounding area.
We are providing volunteers to help in the community with environmental improvement projects and would ask the community to help us identify further local initiatives, for which we will also provide small financial donations.
There will be more updates to follow as we continue to look at further ways we can achieve environmental and carbon offsetting.
